Time has been kind to *Love & Basketball*, the beloved 2000 romantic drama from writer-director Gina Prince-Bythewood. The film, which follows Monica (Sanaa Lathan) and Quincy (Omar Epps) as they prove their prowess on the basketball court and finally give in to their feelings for one another before attending the same college, could have been a cliché sports drama. Instead, it's an engrossing character study with electric chemistry between Lathan and Epps.

*Love & Basketball* remains one of the most cherished films on Lathan's and Epps' lists of credits, even as both have had thriving careers in the 26 years since its release. The same goes for their supporting castmates, a who's who of top-of-the-line Black talent that includes Alfre Woodard, Dennis Haysbert, Regina Hall, and Gabrielle Union.

Today, we're looking back on the all-star cast of *Love & Basketball* and catching up with where they are now.

Sanaa Lathan (Monica Wright)

Sanaa Lathan plays headstrong, vulnerable, basketball-obsessed Monica, who falls for next-door neighbor Quincy when she’s 11.

“What a gift it was that I was able to, at a young age, play this amazing, fierce character in this beloved movie,” she told PEOPLE in 2024. “It became this thing where people watched it over and over and over again.”

Lathan’s nuanced portrayal was her first lead role after a string of supporting and guest spots. She was the daywalker’s mother in *Blade *(1998) before appearing in 1999's coming-of-age rom-coms *The Wood* and *The Best Man*. After *Love & Basketball*, she paired up with Taye Diggs for *Brown Sugar *(2002) and Denzel Washington for *Out of Time *(2003) before delivering a Tony-nominated turn in *A Raisin in the Sun.*

No stranger to genre work, the actress was the final girl in *Alien vs. Predator *(2004) and went on to appear in Steven Soderbergh’s *Contagion* (2011) while picking up regular voice acting gigs as Catwoman on *Harley Quinn* and Cleveland’s wife on *The Cleveland Show*. Her guest work on *Succession* earned her her first Emmy nomination. She made her directorial debut with the 2022 film *On the Come Up*.

Lathan is vocally single and advocates for women to choose themselves until, and unless, they find the right partner. She was notably dating her *Love & Basketball *costar Omar Epps during filming.

Omar Epps (Quincy McCall)

Omar Epps plays Quincy, Monica’s next-door neighbor, hoops rival, and eventual one-and-only.

The actor confessed to ESPN in 2020* *that he didn’t really know how to hoop before the film came around: He had to learn on the fly. When it came to acting, however, he was already a Hollywood staple, having starred in such high-profile films as *Juice *(1992) alongside Tupac Shakur, John Singleton’s *Higher Learning *(1995), and Wes Craven’s *Scream 2 *(1997) — not to mention *The Wood,* where he first paired up with Lathan.

Since the turn of the century, Epps has become a television staple, joining the main cast of *House* before booking *Resurrection*, *Shooter*, and *Power Book III: Raising Kanan**.* He also had a recurring role on the beloved drama *This Is Us*. Most recently, he starred in the independent crime drama *Moses the Black* (2026).

Epps has been married to R&B singer Keisha Spivey since 2006. They have a daughter and a son together. He also has a daughter from a previous relationship.

Alfre Woodard (Camille Wright)

Alfre Woodard plays Monica’s genteel housewife mom, Camille, the polar opposite of her combative younger daughter.

Woodard, of course, needs no introduction, as one of the most acclaimed figures in American acting. She’s been nominated for every award under the sun and was named one of the 25 greatest actors of the 21st century by *The New York Times*.

The actress’ Oscar-nominated performance in *Cross Creek *(1983) established her for good. In the ensuing years, roles in John Sayles’ *Passion Fish *(1992), Spike Lee’s *Crooklyn *(1994), and Maya Angelou’s *Down in the Delta *(1998) secured her reputation. She once again played Sanaa Lathan’s mother in the rom-com *Something New *(2006), starred in season 2 of *Desperate Housewives*, delivered a show-stopping one-scene performance in Best Picture winner *12 Years a Slave** *(2013), and earned a BAFTA nomination as a conflicted prison warden in *Clemency *(2019).

The Tulsa native also has two Marvel characters to her name — as a regular on *Luke Cage* and as a grieving mother in *Captain America: Civil War** *(2016). She also appeared in *The Book of Clarence *(2023) and *Salem’s Lot *(2024) and had a key role on the Apple TV drama series *The Last Frontier*.

Woodard has been married to writer Roderick Spencer since 1983. They have a daughter and a son.

Dennis Haysbert (Zeke McCall)

Dennis Haysbert plays Quincy’s tough-minded father, Zeke, an NBA player who demands more from his son than simply to follow in Dad’s footsteps.

This wasn’t the first sports movie for Haysbert, whose breakthrough role was superstitious slugger Pedro Serrano in *Major League* (1989). After memorable turns in the likes of *Heat *(1995), *Waiting to Exhale *(1995), and Clint Eastwood’s *Absolute Power *(1997), the actor cemented himself in our collective memory yet again as President David Palmer on *24*.

The man with the voice has never slowed down. He headlined David Mamet’s military series *The Unit* while making his presence felt on the big screen in *Far From Heaven *(2002), *Jarhead *(2005), and *Dear White People *(2014). He even played God on *Lucifer*. Of course, he admits most people recognize him from those Allstate ads.

Harry Lennix (Nathan Wright)

Harry Lennix plays Monica’s supportive but quietly demanding father, Nathan.

Lennix is one of the most ubiquitous faces across movies and TV. He was a standout in Spike Lee’s *Get on the Bus *(1996), then brought Shakespeare to modern life in *Titus *(1999) before achieving cult fandom on Joss Whedon’s *Dollhouse*. He later spent a decade as an FBI heavyweight on *The Blacklist*.

The Chicago native had a recurring role on *Billions* and another in the DC universe, showing up in *Man of Steel *(2013)*, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice* (2016)*,* and *Zack Snyder's* *Justice League* (2021). He earned his first Tony nomination in 2025 for his performance in the play *Purpose*.

Lennix has been married to businesswoman Djena Graves since 2009.

Debbi Morgan plays Quincy’s mother, and Zeke’s aggrieved wife, Nona.

It was a rare big-screen performance for the acting veteran, who by that point was a soap-opera legend. In 1989, she became the first African American to win a Daytime Emmy for supporting actress, for her long-running role on *All My Children*. She later became the first Black woman nominated in the lead category.

Her soap career has included long runs on *Generations*, *Loving*, *The City*, and *Port Charles*. During that time, she squeezed in roles in acclaimed films like *Eve's Bayou *(1997) and *The Hurricane *(1999).

Morgan’s television résumé includes multiple installments of the *Power* franchise, a guest spot on Marvel’s *The Defenders*, and an ongoing role on Tyler Perry’s Netflix drama *Beauty in Black*.

Morgan married Jeffrey Winston in 2009.

Regina Hall (Lena Wright)

As Monica’s fashionista sister, Regina Hall made the most out of a small role.

Hall broke through in a big way in the comedy world, starring in four *Scary Movie* (2000) installments. That’s hardly her only long-running franchise: her rom-coms *The Best Man *(1999) and *Think Like a Man *(2012) spawned sequels as well.

Hall has been able to show off her dramatic chops in *Law Abiding Citizen *(2009), *The Hate U Give *(2018), and the indie dramedy *Support the Girls *(2018), for which she became the first Black woman to win the New York Film Critics Circle’s Best Actress award.

She made a fearsome comedy foursome — alongside Tiffany Haddish, Queen Latifah, and Jada Pinkett Smith — that spun box-office gold in the raunchy hit *Girls Trip** *(2017). She earned acclaim for her performance in the satirical mockumentary *Honk for Jesus. Save Your Soul. *(2022) as the wife of a closeted pastor and had a small but impactful role in Paul Thomas Anderson's Oscar-winning film *One Battle After Another** *(2025). She will soon reprise her role as Brenda in the sixth *Scary Movie* film.

Hall is a deeply spiritual woman and tried to become a nun twice — first at age 14 and again at 40. During the second attempt, she discovered she had passed the cutoff age — and nope, it wasn’t a joke!

Gabrielle Union (Shawnee)

Gabrielle Union has a small, pivotal role as Shawnee, a would-be romantic rival who takes Q to the spring dance — but doesn’t get what she wants afterward.

The same year, she hit it big with another generational sports movie, *Bring It On** *(2000), as the rival school’s head cheerleader. Union carved out a niche in romantic comedies, starring in *Two Can Play That Game *(2001), *Deliver Us from Eva *(2003), and *Breakin’ All the Rules *(2004), in addition to action flicks like *Cradle 2 the Grave *(2003).

The veteran actress reinforced her romantic bona fides in the starry ensemble movies *Think Like a Man *and *Think Like a Man Too *(2014) while finding a home on TV in *Being Mary Jane*. She later reprised her *Bad Boys II *(2003) character on the cop procedural *L.A.’s Finest* and earned acclaim for her role in the independent 2022 drama *The Inspection*.

The actress, author, and LGBTQ+ activist has been married to real-life basketball star Dwyane Wade since 2014. They share one daughter, and she is a stepmom to Wade’s three other children.

Tyra Banks (Kyra)

The queen of smizing herself, Tyra Banks, lovingly walks through the final quarter of *Love & Basketball *as Quincy’s fiancée, Kyra — before being dumped (off-screen) just two weeks before the big day.

If Kyra’s life turned out even a fraction as well as Tyra’s did, we could stop feeling sorry for her. The legendary supermodel — and the first Black woman to grace the cover of *Sports Illustrated*’s swimsuit issue — was the face of and creative force behind *America’s Next Top Model** *from 2003 to 2018. Banks has also hosted *The Tyra Banks Show*, *America’s Got Talent*, and *Dancing With the Stars*.

Her acting has been intermittent since an early career arc on *The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air*. She did, however, share a screen romance with Omar Epps in *Higher Learning* and was later part of the bar-dancing ensemble in *Coyote Ugly** *(2000).

Banks has one son, born in 2016, with ex-boyfriend Erik Asla.

Kyla Pratt (Young Monica)

The task of establishing Monica as a young badass from the start fell on Kyla Pratt.

The actress has been a showbiz staple for decades now. Before landing her pivotal *Love & Basketball *role, the L.A. native had been a perpetual guest star on TV, appearing in everything from *ER* and *Living Single *to *Friends *and *Family Matters*. That was a mere prologue to her long-running lead roles on UPN’s *One on One* and *The Proud Family* as the voice of Penny.

She was Eddie Murphy’s daughter in the smash hit *Dr. Dolittle* (1998) — and its four sequels — and has continued to pile up TV work. She guest-starred on Issa Rae’s *Insecure*, booked a regular gig on *Call Me Kat* opposite Mayim Bialik, and joined *Animal Control* in its fourth season.

Pratt was also briefly a reality star on *Black Ink Crew: Compton *(2019), alongside her partner, Danny Kirkpatrick, a tattoo artist and rapper, with whom she shares two children.

Glenndon Chatman (Young Quincy)

As young Q, Glenndon Chatman brings a real energy to the film’s first quarter, as *Love & Basketball* establishes Quincy and Monica’s relationship.

Chatman had previously popped up on *Coach*, *7th Heaven*,* The Jamie Foxx Show*,* *and *Moesha*. He was no stranger to basketball movies either — he was cast as Air Jordan’s brother, Larry, in the made-for-TV biopic,* Michael Jordan: An American Hero* (1999).

As years passed, he appeared on *The District*,* Judging Amy*, and in the Disney Channel original movie *The Luck of the Irish** *(2001) before taking a break from the screen as he reached adulthood.

Chatman returned to acting with a handful of small roles in *No Regrets *(2016) and episodes of *Shut Eye*, *For the People*, and *Dirty Cops L.A.*

- Stephenie LaGrossa Kendrick had her *Survivor 50* torch snuffed after Rick Devens survived a MrBeast-branded coin flip and explains how Cirie helped talk her out of going for the coin flip herself.

- Stephenie reacts to her allies Jonathan and Joe voting her out.

- The ousted player also reveals what we didn't see on TV, including a warning to Cirie and Ozzy

It was a rough Tribal Council for Stephenie LaGrossa Kendrick on this week’s episode of *Survivor 50**.* But even after Rick Devens started spilling secrets and blowing up Stephenie’s game, she still appeared poised to make it through the night. However, then MrBeast showed up with his briefcase and everything changed. Rick volunteered to flip the coin that would either continue or end his game, and when he called it correctly, Stephenie’s game was sunk. She was unanimously voted out, so even her Steal-a-Vote could not save her.

How does Stephenie feel about the MrBeast twist? Did she even consider volunteering for the coin flip herself? Was she surprised Jonathan Young and Joe Hunter abandoned her in the end? And what was going on with her and Cirie Fields out there? We connected with juror number five to ask all that and more, and you can now watch or read the full interview below.

**: What do you think happens if there’s no MrBeast and there’s just a regular vote at last night’s Tribal Council. Who goes to the jury?**

**STEPHENIE LAGROSSA KENDRICK: **So, it was a mess. It was a mess back at camp. There was a lot that wasn't seen, but at the end of the day, we all came back together. There were lots of conversations had, and it was supposed to be Devens. In my mind. [Laughs]

**No, I’ve poked around and that seems to be the case, that he would've gone to the jury, had it been a regular Tribal Council. So once he goes and he plays that coin and it rolls around on the set seemingly forever and it turns on heads and he's safe, did you feel like you were in trouble?**

Yes, but we had a backup plan. If it wasn't Devens, it was gonna be Aubry. And Devens knew he was in trouble, and that's why he did his whole spiel, and then, of course, followed by a pitch. That's why Aubry actually leans over and says, "I don't really want Devans to do it,” because if he becomes safe, she knew she was the next target.

**Was there ever a thought of also volunteering to do the coin flip, knowing that if he was safe then you might be in trouble?**

Yeah, I actually went over and spoke to Jonathan and my trusted advisor Cirie and said, "Should I, you know, flip the coin? Do you guys think I should flip the coin?" And Cirie was like, "Do you want to? " And I was like, "I don't know. Should I? " And she goes, "I don't think so. I think you're fine."

And I said, "Jonathan, what do you think? " And Jonathan's like, "No, I mean, let Devens do it. It's a fifty-fifty chance.” Really? Like, that was a ballsy move and I really kind of wanted to, but then I would've had to fight Devens for it. We probably would've had to have a wrestling match at Tribal or an arm wrestling match. And the backup was Aubry. So, in my mind, even though the edit didn't really look like that, because a lot of people are like, "Why didn't you flip the coin?" I'm like, "I wanted to!” But, you know, you're taking a big risk

So there were a lot of conversations. There was a lot of live Tribal before that, after that, during that, lthere was a lot going on they didn't show. So I definitely thought it was gonna be Devens, and if it wasn't Devens, the next plan was Aubry, as it's been for the past three weeks.

Stephenie LaGrossa Kendrick on 'Survivor 50'

Stephenie LaGrossa Kendrick on 'Survivor 50'.

Robert Voets/CBS

**What did Joe and Jonathan tell you they were going to do during that live Tribal after Rick was safe?**

They're both saying, "It's Aubry." And you see Jonathan talking and saying, "It's Aubry." Now, Joe, on the other hand, I learned last night was the one that went and told Cirie. It was really Jonathan's plan. Jonathan came to me on the beach and I said, "I don't think we have the numbers to get Ozzy out.” You didn't see any of that. I said, "If you can get the numbers, I will consider it, but I don't think so."

So then we together do go to Aubry and Devens. Jonathan pitches them. I do not. And they're all about it. Then he goes to his trusted advisor Joe, and then Joe goes and immediately tells Cirie. Joe is the problem.

**So I have two questions about that. Was Joe telling Cirie about the plan to vote out Ozzy an attempt to get her on board, or a warning because he did not want Ozzy going home?**

I think it was an attempt to get her on board, even though we already told Joe that Ozzy and Cirie are like this [crosses fingers]. If we're gonna do this, they cannot know about it.

I'm not really sure what Joe is doing in this game right now because I saw two weeks ago that Joe knew it was Devens and Aubry yet again, and he goes and talks to Cirie, and Cirie actually tells him, "No, it has to be Coach and Chrissy. This is our chance, Joe." And Joe's like, "No, I want it to be Devens. I don't trust him." And she's like, "No, this is a gift, Joe. We can kill two birds with one stone right now and take them out."

Why Joe doesn't think to come immediately at least Jonathan, who is supposed to be his number one out there. I don't know what game Joe is playing, but it's not a very smart one. If you are in an alliance with Jonathan — forget about me — if you're in an alliance with Jonathan, why are you not relaying this message? Because we would've known back then: *I guess Cirie's not with us.*

Because at this point, I at least think Cirie's with me. Because what you're not seeing is she's saying to me, "You're like family to me, you're like a sister to me. I gotta let you know the plan changed. It's now Coach and Chrissy. I don't want you to be on the outs." I'm like, "Oh, thanks. Thanks for telling me. We can flip it back. “She's like, "Don't be the one on the wrong side of the numbers, Steph. Don't be ... "

And she's saying all this stuff to me. Then she says to me walking to Tribal Council this week, "Girl, we can't be fighting. We gotta be on the same page. We're like sisters, we're like family." And I'm like, "No one's fighting." It was an idea. Somebody came to me, Ozzy's name came up, he has an idol. I don't want it to be Ozzy. I want it to be Devens. That's been the plan for weeks now.”

And she's like, "Okay, it's definitely Devens." I'm like, "And if Devens is safe…” and she's like, “Definitely Aubry." So Cirie is feeding me the lines. Like Cirie’s very good at the emotional manipulation. She knows what she's doing and I'm buying it hook, line and sinker because I'm giving her my 1000% loyalty. I'm hopeful she's giving it back to me.

**This gets to how good she is. Because we know the dynamic going into the game ****from my cover story**** that Cirie was very wary of you, completely unbeknownst to you.**

I don't understand why.

**But it sounds like what you're saying is that even though she came into the game wary of you, you weren't picking up on that on the island at all.**

No, we spoke before the game. And we spoke about the rumors going on that I'm gonna try to take her out and this and that. And I'm like, “Cirie, you have my word.” And Cirie knows, I cannot lie — to her especially. She knows me. I can lie to other people that don't really know me, but her, I'm gonna tell you the truth.

So if I'm telling you before the game, “I am not gonna be gunning for you.” And she and I said, "Let's just get there. Let's just get to the end game. And then obviously,  if I have to choose myself over you, fine, but let's just get there." I was never going to target her. We spoke about it before the game. She said, "I heard the rumor. I'm not worried about the rumor.” If the person that started the rumor really is concerned, they could call me. She goes, "I'm with you. We are like family." And I said, "Cirie, you have my word." And she knew it.

And we don't have a chance to talk till day 13 out there. So by the time we talk, she's already gone on to another plan. She never intended to be with me. Never once. I'm still going with the fact that I'm gonna be loyal to her and loyal to the people I said I'd be loyal with. Also, you know, I was in with Christian. I was open to meeting new people as well. It wasn't like old school do or die. But I don't think Cirie ever intended on being with me ever. And that's my fault yet again for just being loyal and true.

**Speaking of being loyal and true, Jonathan and Joe voted you out. Were you surprised by that when you saw the vote?**

Joe, when I told him about the Steal-a-Vote, he couldn't even look at me. It went right over his head. He was like a child that was so mad that I didn't tell him sooner.

Like, he could not deal with that. So Joe was out. To Jonathan, I'm like, "Listen, I have a Steal-a-Vote. I wanted to tell you sooner. Cirie called me out on it. She's known for a while. She told me not to tell any of you because everybody knows about every idol. So I kept it a secret.” And he goes, "Okay." Like Jonathan wasn't even phased. He's like, "All right, let's use it.”

So no, it didn't surprise me about Joe. In fact, Joe, after Jeff brings the urn over, and Joe — who’s telling me, "You're good, you're good the whole time" —before he reads the votes, he goes, "It's you." I go, "What?" He goes, "It's you. " I go, "Oh, thanks a lot." He's like, "I love you." I'm like, "Yeah, go F…" I said some profanity to him. I was like, "Whatever."

And then another thing that they didn't show was I went over to Ozzy and I said, "Listen, your name did come up because I was told that you're telling people you don't trust me. " And he owned it. He said, “I did say that and I wanted to see if it would get back to you." And I'm like, "Why do you not trust me?"

Last week, he was so worried, he was gonna play his idol. He's like, "Should I play it? Should I play it?" And I'm like, "No, you're good. You're good. It's not you.” I'm talking him off a ledge. He's telling me, "Stephenie, listen, I trust you.” He's buttering me up. Him and Cirie the whole time are buttering me up. And I wasn't sure they were fully with me, but I was like, "I'll just go with it. My name's not being brought up.” And I was never gonna bring their names up, ever. That was the truth.

When Rizo's like, “Oh, blah, blah." No, Rizo. I played this game a lot. I'm not gonna be the one throwing names out there and leading the charge because this is what happens. It turns on you. I know this game. I've been there. So I do go over to Ozzy and Cirie. I explain to Ozzy that I had no intention of bringing his name up. His name has come up because now apparently my name's come up.

I call them both out. You see me talking to Cirie about it. I'm like, "I can't even believe you would throw my name out there. What are you doing? Why would you do that? I would never.” Then I say, "If you two get rid of me, if you even think for a second about getting rid of me, mark my words, you will be next in some way, shape or form." Cirie says, "Who are you talking to? " I said, "I'm talking to you. I promise you, I am in your best interest to keep around. Mark my words.” I cannot believe it didn't air.

I said this to her on *Heroes vs. Villains. *I said, "If you do not come with Colby and Tom and I, and you get rid of me, you will be next." I said it to her in the water, find the footage, swear to God. I say it again. Let's see how this pans out for her and Ozzy. I am a loyal old schooler. I'm loyal to a fault. I'm not even cut out for these games because I don't lie great, you know? I'm giving you my word.

**Let’s go back a bit to when Rick blew everything up and told everyone about your Steal-a-Vote and blabbed about the people your side was targeting. What’s going through your mind when he does that?**

So obviously they're all pissed off. Somehow it got turned on me, so now I gotta do damage control. But Jonathan was the only guy I was actually trusting that was telling me the truth out there. And again, loyal to a fault, I'm not gonna throw Jonathan under the bus. I'm just not. My kids are always like, “Snitches get stitches, snitches get stitches.” And I kept hearing that in my head. And I'm like” Do not be a snitch. Try to turn this somehow back on Devens and Aubry.

Because we all circled back around at camp. They don't show it, but we're all back to, “All right. Ozzy, your name came up. Steph, your name came up. Cirie, whoevers name came up. Let's go back to the original plan. Devens. And if not Devens, Aubry. Can we do that? Can we all just come together, please?" So when that happens, I'm not gonna throw Jonathan under the bus now. That’s the blame game. I'm gonna throw it back on them. And I did my best to try to do that.

Tiffany is like, "Why did you tell Cirie about your Steal-a-Vote if that's the girl you're trying to get out? " I do explain, which they don't show, that I told Cirie about it weeks ago. She was the only person that knew. Not today. She's known forever. And I threw that out there because I knew Cirie was starting to throw me under the bus. So I was like, "You know what? I'm gonna throw you under the bus a little bit. You knew about this and you haven't told anybody. You're gonna have to deal with that now if I go.”

But I'm still hopeful. But that Steal-a-Vote sucked because I had to play it before they even go vote. So it's like almost not fair because now they can all be like, "Oh, she's gonna use it. Let's just all flip the vote to her." There's a lot going on. MrBeast did not help. I considered flipping the coin, but no one was gonna let me flip that coin. Definitely Devens was not gonna let me flip that coin because only one person can, you have to fight over it or we had to go to rocks. I should've forced everybody to go to rocks.

**Anything else that happened out there that didn't make it to TV that you wish we'd seen?**

People are just like, "God, how are you trusting Cirie? She gets rid of Colby. She gets rid of Coach. She gets rid of Chrissy.” I mean, she just is so good at what she does. Like, Coach called it. She's an emotional manipulator. She is saying to me every day before every Tribal Council, "You're like family to me. I'm not writing your name down unless it's for the win. You're like a Parvati to me. We're gonna go to the end."

I mean, she's saying these things to me and I'm, like, so frigging loyal. Call me stupid, whatever you want. Call her a master planner. I think she's a manipulator, but good on her. You know what I mean? Cirie is made for these games. She's cut out for this. I played the best game I could play with honor and some loyalty and trying not to be this brutal, cutthroat, pretty good example for kids everywhere.

And I didn't lose my cool. I could have lost my cool at that Tribal Council. I think I played a very calm, cool, collected game. My name never came up until the night I go home. So I did the best with the hand I was dealt. My whole alliance dropped like flies. She single-handedly took out my entire alliance, which I thought was supposed to be part of her alliance too.

Robert Voets/CBS

**How do you think this game is different if Coach and Chrissy don't decide to be teammates on that one immunity challenge with the paired elimination, because that kinda seemed to break your whole alliance?**

That's another thing. Had we known you were gonna get voted out together, everybody would've paired with somebody that's not necessarily with their alliance. Now, I was happy to pair with Ozzy because I knew he had an idol. But there's so much luck in this game with all these idols and with all these twists, too.

And then one last thing. I just wanna make this known. I respect Cirie’s game. This is nothing personal against Cirie at all and her gameplay. She plays a great game, a great social game. You know what I mean? I just was under the impression she and I were gonna stick together. And unfortunately, she was never under that impression, and I've learned that now. So fourth show, fool me once, shame on me, fool me twice, shame on you. So we'll see how the future goes. And I do love her. I love her as a person. It’s nothing personal. It’s a game. At the end of the day, it’s a game.

- *Toy Story 5* marks the first film without Don Rickles and Estelle Harris as the voices of Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head.

- Director Andrew Stanton talks through the process of recasting the characters with Jeff Bergman and Anna Vocino.

- Tom Hanks shares the story of how his kids met Rickles for the first time.

*Toy Story 5*, in addition to being the first *Toy Story* movie directed by Pixar creative Andrew Stanton, is also the first installment of this beloved animated franchise without the original voices of Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head.

Don Rickles and Estelle Harris originated the roles of the happy plastic couple in that first film from 1995. They continued to play the characters up until their deaths, including in various video game offshoots and shorts. Rickles died at 90 in 2017, and Harris' death followed in 2022 at 93.

In the case of the late stand-up comedian, known for his brand of insult comedy, Rickles did not record a new voice performance for *Toy Story 4*. With his family's permission, Pixar combed through "25 years of everything we didn't use," including material from past films and theme park attractions, to piece together a new recording.

Stanton, who began work on *Toy Story 5* a few years later in 2022, didn't have that same luxury. He was then tasked with recasting both roles for the next sequel (in theaters June 19).

"We just made sure that their families were okay with it," the filmmaker and Pixar's Vice President of Creative— who previously directed *A Bug's Life*, the two *Finding Nemo* films, and *WALL-E* — tells **. "They understood that we have to keep the characters going, but we wanted their blessing because we wanted to honor the time that they had devoted to the characters. And, in a way, we are still honoring them by making sure they sound like that."

The job was searching for "sound-alikes," Stanton says — meaning voice actors who could sound like Rickles and Harris. Pixar found them in Jeff Bergman, the new Mr. Potato Head, and Anna Vocino, the new Mrs. Potato Head. "I was shocked," Stanton says. "They both just nailed it."

*Toy Story 5* was inspired by that pivotal age in a child's life when they find it's not so cool to play with toys anymore. Bonnie (Scarlett Spears) is now 8 years old and having trouble making friends as the last kid on her block who still plays. Everyone else seems to be consumed with screens. So her parents gift her Lilypad (Greta Lee), a smart device that sends Bonnie's room full of toys into chaos.

In a separate interview, Tom Hanks and Tim Allen, who return as Woody and Buzz Lightyear among the star-packed cast, reminisce about Rickles.

"He was much like his character, kind of an angry man," Allen says before channeling the voice of the comic: "'What do you know about World War II?!'"

"I took my kids to see *Toy Story 2* — I think it was that," Hanks recalls. "Estelle was there...A bunch of the cast got together in a theater and watched it. I took my boys. My youngest then was 15 years old [Truman Theodore Hanks], and I said, 'Come on, guys. You gotta meet Don Rickles.'" Hanks, too, then does his Rickles impression: "'Truman, huh? You're the kid? How old are yah? How old are yah? ... 'Bout to turn 16, huh? Well, get yourself some broads and live it up.' And then he wandered off. And they still talk about that day they met Don Rickles."

- Shoshana Bean recalled taking over a day early for Idina Menzel on Broadway in her role as Elphaba after Menzel broke her ribs falling through an escape door onstage.

- Bean said she felt "horrible" and was worried the audience was "going to hate" her for taking over early.

- Menzel returned to the Gershwin Theatre stage to take her official final bow the day after her painful injury.

The adage "the show must go on" rang true for Shoshana Bean days before she formally stepped in for Idina Menzel in *Wicked*.

During a Tuesday appearance on the *Dinner's on Me With Jesse Tyler Ferguson* podcast, Bean, who is starring on Broadway in *The Lost Boys*, spoke about taking over for Menzel as the originator of Elphaba on Broadway. Bean was days away from taking over the role in an official capacity in January 2005 when tragedy struck.

"We were upstairs, me and Megan [Hilty] because Megan was a standby with me at the time. We're with the stage manager and we're just stepping through reviewing things because I'm going to take over on Tuesday. And again, I'd been on a million times," she said. She was then told she might be going onstage sooner than expected.

Menzel had injured herself, falling through an escape door onstage and breaking her ribs. There was a period of uncertainty about if *Wicked *was going on at all that afternoon for the Saturday matinee. "They didn't want to move her. They had to wait for the ambulance to come. And all the while they're just holding the show. I think they held for like 45 minutes. I could be wrong," Bean said.**

"And so we held and we held and nowhere in my mind am I like, 'I got to go get ready and go on,'" she continued. "And sure enough at one point they're like, 'We're finishing the show. Go.' And they got me ready in 7 minutes." Bean said the makeup team had to "slap the paint on" and went on in time to sing "For Good" and bow with the cast at the show's conclusion, which she called "ludicrous."

Bean said the audience "had no idea what happened" and didn't know about Menzel's injury, but it was announced to the crowd that she was stepping in for the remainder of the matinee show that afternoon.**

She was convinced Menzel would be back for the evening's show, since she only had a few shows left in her run as Elphaba and people had flown in from all over to see her. Bean was told, "Kiddo, you might as well consider tonight like your takeover."

Bean said she felt "horrible" and was worried the audience was "going to hate" her, but "it was the complete opposite." Menzel came back for her final bow at the end of what was supposed to be her last show the following evening.

"It was the best possible thing they could do because you can't let this woman not take her final bow after — I don't know why I'm getting emotional about it — but, like, putting everything you put into something to originate it and take that ride. You live for that last weekend for like a release and to let people just like give you your flowers," she said.

Menzel spoke about the injury and her conclusion as Elphaba before passing the torch to Bean. "At the same point in the show when I fell through the stage, two minutes before the end, she left the stage and allowed me to come and finish the show, which I could barely do," she told *ELLE* in March 2025.

"That was the end of my Broadway* Wicked* run, and I got to take some flowers and have a nice send-off. I’ll never forget that Shoshana did that for me, because not everyone would," she added. "I love her to this day for that."**

The cause of death for 57-year-old Patrick Muldoon, best known for starring in "Days of Our Lives" and "Melrose Place," has been released.

Muldoon's immediate cause of death was a myocardial infarction, or a heart attack, according to a death certificate obtained by Us Weekly and People. He died April 19 and was cremated April 28.

The underlying causes that contributed to his death included hereditary coagulopathy disorder, which is characterized by a slowed blood clotting process, and pulmonary embolism, which is caused by a "blood clot that breaks loose and travels through the bloodstream to the lungs," according to the National Library of Medicine's Medline Plus.

Patrick Muldoon attends the premiere of "Riff Raff" during the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival at Princess of Wales Theatre on Sept. 9, 2024, in Toronto.

Muldoon played Austin Reed on "Days of Our Lives" and Richard Hart on the "Beverly Hills, 90210" soap spinoff "Melrose Place."

The Los Angeles native, who received two Rose Bowl rings during his time playing football for the University of Southern California, got his start as a model for Wilhelmina, where he would star in Calvin Klein ads. By the mid-'80s, he would kick off his lengthy acting career with an appearance on "Who's the Boss?" He followed up with a role on "Saved by the Bell" playing Jeffrey Hunter, the manager of The Max who briefly dated Tiffani Thiessen's Kelly Kapowski.

By 1992, Muldoon was starring in "Days of Our Lives" as one of two actors to portray Austin Reed, an aspiring boxer with a troubled past and the love interest of Carrie Brady (Christie Clark). Austin Peck went on to play Austin Reed for lengthier stints between 1995 and 2021, aside from Muldoon's reprisal of the role in 2011 and 2012.

Muldoon was set to coproduce the upcoming crime thriller "Kockroach" starring Chris Hemsworth, Zazie Beetz, Channing Tatum and Alec Baldwin.

He is also set to star in several films posthumously, including the Denise Richards crime thriller "Dirty Hands."
