Timothée Chalamet is clarifying his viral comments about his "quest" for awards glory.
During a recent Q&A at a London Marty Supreme screening, the three-time Best Actor Oscar nominee — he is up for the award again in March for his role in the Josh Safdie-directed flick — addressed his previous comments about his pursuit of greatness, including a coveted Academy Award.
After British filmmaker Richard Curtis asked the star, 30, whether he wants the Oscar during a rapid-fire question session at London's Prince Charles Cinema on Sunday, Feb. 1, Chalamet reiterated his desire for the award — but provided more "context" this time around.
"Listen, yes," the actor told Curtis, per Variety, proceeding with visible caution. "But I want to give you context for that, because sometimes I feel like I've been misinterpreted in my quest."
"All these award things, they supplement the movie," he continued, according to the outlet. "I'm not going to turn this into a monologue about the crisis of theaters and stuff, but when you go to an awards show, everyone's participating in an advertisement for each other — in the best sense of the word, I'm not saying that in a malicious way."
Chalamet then went on to explain that his quest for greatness in his own career does not detract from his support of fellow nominees and their respective projects, citing several 2026 Best Picture nominees. (Along with his Best Actor nod, he is also nominated for Marty Supreme in the category as a producer of the film.)

"I'm supporting Hamnet and One Battle After Another the way anyone in those movies is supporting Marty Supreme," the actor told Curtis. "So anything else, yes, it helps to feed into the narrative … everyone's pursuing it, you know?"
The Little Women actor was not exactly pleased with his explanation, however, immediately stating that he "didn't explain myself well there," per Variety. "I don't want it to be misinterpreted that the world is in the condition it's in and I'm going to bed like, 'F--- man, I need that [Oscar].' You know, I'm living on planet Earth," added Chalamet.
Later in the Feb. 1 conversation, the actor circled back to his "dream" after Curtis asked him about his purpose and desired legacy.
"These days, it's paying it forward," Chalamet said, per Variety. "When you're young, you need things to believe in — narratives to believe in, stories to believe in. Particularly if you grew up like Marty, particularly if you grew up like me, you believe in figures that make you dream. Virgil Abloh, the late fashion designer, he had a great quote: He said he was living his 17-year-old dream, or something to that extent. I feel like right now I'm in a position where I'm doing it."
"That's why I try to own it," Chalamet added, seemingly referring to his quest for greatness. "I'm not shying away from it, I'm not being fake humble where I don't feel it. And equally, I'm leaving it behind for someone that I hope I'm inspiring. So if they've got a f---ed up life, they can go, 'Man, but he's f---ing doing it. And I want to do it like that.'"

"I know we're in a subjective business, but the truth is I'm really in pursuit of greatness," he said during his acceptance speech. "I know people don't usually talk like that, but I want to be one of the greats. I'm inspired by the greats. I'm inspired by the greats here tonight. I'm as inspired by Daniel Day-Lewis, Marlon Brando and Viola Davis, as I am by Michael Jordan and Michael Phelps, and I want to be up there, so I'm deeply grateful to that."
"This doesn't signify that, but it's a little more fuel. It's a little more ammo to keep going," added the star.
The A Complete Unknown star went on to lose the Best Actor Oscar at the 2025 ceremony to Adrien Brody, who accepted the win for his work in The Brutalist. Chalamet was previously up for the award in Call Me by Your Name at the 2018 ceremony, but lost to Gary Oldman, who won for Darkest Hour.
