Wicked actresses Ginna Claire Mason and Mary Kate Morrissey celebrated the release of Wicked: For Good by reimagining the song at the center of the sequel.
Mason, 35, and Morrissey, 36, struck up a friendship while portraying Glinda and Elphaba on the national tour of Wicked before taking their performances to Broadway at separate times. The former co-stars marked the Friday, November 21, premiere of the film adaptation's sequel by dropping a country version of "For Good."
"Back in March, [Mary Kate] finished her run as the green girl in New York. I came into her dressing room on her closing night and said that we should record 'For Good' to document this chapter of our lives," Mason wrote via Instagram on Friday. "She immediately suggested we do a country version. I thought she was joking! She wasn't."
She continued: "Don't get me wrong — I love country! I'm from Nashville! It just wasn't part of my original vision. But I was totally willing to give it a try! We put together an inspiration playlist with some favorite artists like Alison Krauss and Nickel Creek and Little Big Town and took it to my favorite producer in Nashville, Nathan Nockels, to help with orchestrating and recording. We even got [Wicked composer and lyricist] Stephen Schwartz's blessing to proceed with this newly imagined version of his classic. Some incredible Nashville musicians jumped in to make this dream a reality."
