On a recent trip to Detroit to an unofficial 16th annual Magnum P.I. Day at Comerica Park, Tom Selleck, who played Thomas Magnum, gave an exclusive interview with Hour Detroitand one of the topics they touched on was whether he would reprise his Blue Bloods role as Commissioner Frank Reagan on the spinoff Boston Blue.

"I don't know if I would do Boston Blue — that's another show," he said. "I think it's partly my lot in life to make sure Blue Bloods has its place in television history, but I don't think it's my lot in life to keep playing Frank Reagan. I can't predict the future. But I would like to do a comedy because I've done a few that were successful."

Earlier, Donnie Wahlberg, who played Danny Reagan on Blue Bloods and is now reprising the role on Boston Blue, told Paradethat he and Selleck had discussed the new series.

"Of course, I spoke to Tom the minute I was deciding if this was something I was going to do. And I can't really get into the details of those conversations, but he's been very supportive. I can say, would I love for Tom to come up to Boston? Sure. Or would I love Danny to go to New York and visit Frank? Absolutely, yes. Tom's always going to base his decisions on the work and material, and so yes, of course, I'd love to work with him on the show, and when the time comes, we will hopefully craft an idea that moves his heart and makes him want to do it."

To date, Boston Blue has featured cameos from Blue Bloods stars Marisa Ramirez as Maria Baez and Bridget Moynahan as Erin Regan, and Danny has had off-camera conversations with his father.

But the bottom line is that Selleck still doesn't understand the cancellation of Blue Bloods, so it might take something really special to get him off of his 63-acre ranch in Thousand Oaks, Calif. to guest star on Boston Blue.

"It was a huge disappointment, and I still don't know why CBS did it," he said. "When we went off the air, we were the No. 6 show out of 100 on broadcast television," he told Hour Detroit. "It was actually No. 9, but if you get rid of the football, we were the sixth most popular series in all of television. I've been on a lot of sets that were miserable where the cast didn't like each other, but in Blue Bloods, everyone was professional and everyone liked each other. That is so rare."

Boston Blue airs Fridays at 10 p.m. ET/PT on CBS. Streams next day on Paramount+.
